How We Calculate — Our Methodology

Hijri Dates & the Islamic Calendar

Our default calendar is the Umm al-Qura system, the calculated astronomical calendar officially used in Saudi Arabia. It is computed from the birth of the new moon at the coordinates of Makkah, which is why it can be published years in advance. For Pakistan, India and Bangladesh we apply the customary -1 day moon-sighting offset, because the Ruet-e-Hilal committees in these countries begin each month only after a confirmed physical sighting of the crescent, which usually falls one evening after the calculated date.

Every projected date on this site — Ramadan, the two Eids, Ashura, Shab e Barat, Hajj — is therefore an estimate that can shift by one day in either direction. Final religious observance should always follow the announcement of your local moon-sighting authority or masjid.

Zakat Calculations

Zakat is calculated at the standard rate of 2.5% on net zakatable wealth held for one lunar year. The nisab thresholds used are 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, and you can choose either standard. Gold purity conversions (24K, 22K, 21K, 18K) use standard fineness ratios, and tola is converted at 11.664 grams. Deductible liabilities follow the widely accepted position of limiting deductions to debts due within the coming twelve months. Where the four schools of jurisprudence differ — for example on the zakatability of women\'s jewellery — the calculator lets you select your madhab, but the result remains an estimate, not a fatwa.

Prayer Times & Qibla

Prayer times are computed from your location\'s coordinates using standard solar-position formulas with well-known calculation methods (such as Muslim World League, University of Islamic Sciences Karachi, and Umm al-Qura). Asr can be computed by the Standard (Shafi\'i/Maliki/Hanbali) or Hanafi shadow method. Qibla direction is the great-circle bearing from your location to the Kaaba (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E).

Privacy & Accuracy

All calculators run entirely in your browser; your figures are never uploaded or stored. We review our event dates against the published Umm al-Qura calendar and correct any discrepancy we find. If you spot an error, please contact us — corrections are published promptly.
