What is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is a charity the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made obligatory on every Muslim at the end of Ramadan. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory — one saa' of dates or one saa' of barley — upon every Muslim, free or slave, male or female, young or old." (Agreed upon — Bukhari and Muslim)

It serves two purposes. It purifies the fasting person's Ramadan from any idle talk or shortcomings, and it gives the poor food to eat on the day of Eid so that no one is left out of the celebration. That is why the timing matters so much — it has to reach the needy before the Eid prayer, not after.

It is called Fitrana, Sadaqat al-Fitr, or Fitrah in different parts of the world, but it is the same obligation everywhere.

Who Must Pay Zakat al-Fitr?

Unlike annual Zakat (Zakat al-Mal), Zakat al-Fitr is not tied to how wealthy you are over a full year. It is owed by every Muslim who has enough to cover their own and their family's needs on the day of Eid — which in practice means almost every household.

The head of the household pays on behalf of everyone in the home: themselves, their spouse, their children, and anyone else they support. Children are included — parents or guardians pay for minors, even newborns; a child born before sunset on the last day of Ramadan is counted.

The Hanafi school sets the threshold at owning wealth above one's needs equal to the nisab; the majority of scholars (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) require it of anyone who has surplus food for Eid day and night. If you are unsure, follow the scholar or council you trust.

How Much is Zakat al-Fitr? (One Sa')

The prescribed amount is one sa' of the staple food of your region — roughly 2.5 to 3 kilograms of wheat, rice, barley, or dates per person. Because most people today pay the cash equivalent, Islamic councils announce a per-person cash figure each Ramadan based on local food prices.

That is why the amount differs in every country: it tracks what 2.5–3 kg of staple food actually costs where you live. The calculator above uses the widely used 2026 figures; always confirm with your local mosque for the current year's official rate.

When Must Zakat al-Fitr Be Paid?

Before the Eid prayer — that is the deadline. The Prophet ﷺ instructed that it be given "before the people go out to the prayer" (Sahih al-Bukhari). Whoever pays it before the prayer has given an accepted Zakat al-Fitr; whoever pays it after the prayer has given ordinary charity (Sadaqah). (Abu Dawud 1609)

You may pay a day or two before Eid — and many scholars allow paying from the beginning of Ramadan, especially when giving through a charity that needs time to buy and distribute food. If you are paying through an organization, send it early so it reaches families in time. Late payment does not disappear — it counts as general Sadaqah, but it no longer fulfills the Fitr obligation.

Can Zakat al-Fitr Be Paid in Cash?

There is a well-known scholarly difference here, and it is worth stating plainly. The Hanafi school permits paying the cash equivalent — a position also held by scholars such as Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, Hasan al-Basri, and Ibn Taymiyyah. The majority (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) traditionally held that it must be given as staple food.

Today, most councils and charities accept cash, reasoning that it lets the poor buy what they actually need. Food is still perfectly valid and, in many places, preferred. Follow a scholar or council you trust. Either way, the amount is the same: one sa' — about 2.5–3 kg of staple food — or its cash value.

Zakat al-Fitr vs Fidyah

These two get mixed up every Ramadan. Zakat al-Fitr is paid by every household at the end of Ramadan regardless of whether everyone fasted. Fidyah is paid only for fasts that were missed and cannot be made up — for example, due to chronic illness or old age. A person can easily owe both in the same year. ❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

One sa' of staple food (about 2.5–3 kg) or its cash value. For 2026 the Council of Islamic Ideology set Rs. 300 per person in Pakistan (wheat rate); the US is typically $10–$15 and the UK £5–£7. Confirm with your local mosque.

Yes. The head of household pays for every dependent, including minor children and newborns — a child born before sunset on the last day of Ramadan counts.

Before the Eid prayer begins. Whoever pays it before the prayer has given an accepted Zakat al-Fitr; after the prayer it counts as general Sadaqah (Abu Dawud 1609).

Yes — many scholars permit paying from the start of Ramadan, and charities prefer early payment so food reaches families before Eid.

The Hanafi school and most modern councils allow the cash equivalent; the majority of classical scholars preferred staple food. Both are practiced — follow a scholar or council you trust.

Obligatory on every Muslim who has enough to cover their family's needs on Eid day, by the hadith of Ibn Umar (Bukhari and Muslim).

Pay it as soon as you remember. It counts as Sadaqah rather than Zakat al-Fitr, and you should intend to make up what was missed.

The wheat rate is the minimum. Scholars encourage paying according to what you can afford — the dates or raisins rate gives the poor better support.

Yes. Zakat al-Fitr is tied to the end of Ramadan, not to whether you fasted. Missed fasts are a separate matter — see the Fidyah Calculator.

To poor and needy Muslims in your community, directly or through a trusted mosque or registered charity — early enough that it reaches them before Eid.

Zakat al-Fitr: One Measure Per Person, Before Eid Prayer

Zakat al-Fitr is different from annual zakat in every way that matters: it is not 2.5%, it is not based on a year's holdings, and it is not paid at a personal anniversary. It is a fixed measure of staple food, or its money value, paid for every person in the household, including children, and due before the Eid al-Fitr prayer so that no one in the community spends Eid hungry. Its purpose is purification of the fast and provision for the poor on the festival day, and its deadline is what gives it urgency.

Work it with a household example. A family of five, two parents and three children, pays five times the per-person rate. If the local per-person rate is set at, for example, $10 in money terms, the household total is $50, paid before Eid prayer, ideally in the last days of Ramadan so distribution reaches recipients in time. The head of household commonly pays for dependants, and the rate itself follows the local staple food price, so it varies by city and year rather than being fixed worldwide.

This page gives guidance, not a fatwa, so for a household with members in different cities, a newborn during Ramadan, or a dependant living elsewhere, consult a scholar or your mosque. The mistake to avoid is treating Fitr like annual zakat and delaying it; its value lies in arriving before Eid, not in its size.
